Vinyl flooring in the bathroom: The special requirements for a flooring in the bathroom

Basically, every floor ingesity, including a vinyl floor in the bathroom, must meet special requirements.

The bathroom is a humid room, where steam develops and moisture is created during showering and bathing. In addition, a bathroom floor covering must be a combination of suitability for everyday use and feel-good factor.

To meet these criteria, vinyl flooring in the bathroom must be waterproof and hygienic. It must be easy to clean and feel warm and pleasant when walking barefoot. A vinyl floor in the bathroom must also match the style of the bathroom and have design qualities so that a harmonious ambience is created overall. Whether vinyl flooring can be used in the bathroom depends on its composition, its quality and on the vinyl floor installation technique.

Vinyl flooring in the bathroom: Which is the right flooring for the bathroom?

There are three different types of vinyl floors. But not everyone is suitable as a vinyl floor in the bathroom. A distinction is made between full vinyl, also known as solid vinyl, click vinyl and click vinyl with HDF backing.

1. Is full vinyl suitable as a vinyl floor in the bathroom?

Solid vinyl or solid vinyl are 2 to 4 millimeters thickness planks, which are often also called PVC strips.

This floor covering is called full vinyl or solid vinyl because it is made exclusively of moisture-repellent plastic, which is inherent in a glass-fibre-reinforced vinyl carrier. On it is a decorative layer and utility layer with a PU coating. Due to this composition, this type of vinyl floor in the bath does not lose its original shape even when in contact with water, moisture or water vapor.

Solid vinyl is firmly bonded to the substrate as a vinyl floor in the bathroom. This gives it its stability, makes it robust and resistant.

2. Does Click Vinyl work as a vinyl floor in the bathroom?

Click vinyl works similarly to click laminate.

The approximately 8 to 12 millimetre thick click elements are connected by a click connection without being glued to the floor. Instead, they are laid loosely on a foam underlay or impact sound insulation. Click-Vinyl is also available in full vinyl. However, the click connections are not waterproof, so that moisture and humidity can penetrate the floor.

The disadvantage of Klick-Vinyl as a vinyl floor in the bathroom is also that the floor can deform at very warm temperatures and lose its original shape. Full vinyl equipped with a click connection is not the first choice when it comes to a vinyl floor in the bathroom.

3. Does click vinyl with HDF carrier suitable as vinyl flooring in the bathroom?

Click-Vinyl with HDF carrier is multi-layered and equipped with a carrier plate. Only the top layer is covered with a very thin vinyl layer measuring only one millimeter. Click vinyl with HDF backing is not suitable as a vinyl floor in the bathroom, as it permanently deforms under the influence of moisture, humidity and wetness and loses its original shape.

Vinyl flooring in the bathroom and its advantages

Vinyl floors are the right solution in the bathroom whenever modern or unsightly tiles are no longer to be covered or the bathroom is given a new flooring.

  • In contrast to the laying of tiles, the laying of a vinyl floor is less time-consuming.
  • If a bathroom is tiled, dust and dirt can accumulate in the individual joints and, in the worst case, mould can form. For this reason, a vinyl floor in the bathroom is easier to maintain and more hygienic.
  • The feel-good effect of a vinyl floor in the bathroom is much higher than that of foot-cold tiles.
  • A vinyl floor in the bathroom is available in different colours, structures and designs, so that a tile design is not to be dispensed with and an individual design of the bathroom is possible.
  • In order to avoid slip hazard, there are special vinyl floors with slip resistance or vinyl floors with structure.
  • Compared to tiles, a vinyl floor in the bathroom is much more cost effective.

All in all, full vinyl is the clear winner when it comes to a vinyl floor in the bathroom, because it combines numerous advantages. A low installation height, a wide range of decor and design options, water and moisture resistance and the excellent price-performance ratio are the most important features that distinguish a vinyl floor in the bathroom.

Vinyl flooring in the bathroom: This is what matters when laying vinyl flooring

Especially when laying vinyl flooring in the bathroom, a careful primer is important, which is applied with a roller. Subsequently, the substrate is leveled with a cement-bound balancing mass, which is evenly distributed and smoothed with a smoothing. Possible unevennesses are sanded with a single-disc machine after drying.

The same applies to air bubbles, which can easily be removed with a spiked roller before drying. These are just a few of the preparatory work for the subfloor that must be taken into account when laying vinyl flooring in the bathroom. Only then can the actual laying begin, and this too is complicated because important details have to be taken into account in this respect to ensure the tightness.

When laying vinyl flooring in the bathroom, certain finishing touches are required that determine whether the flooring is really waterproof in the end. This is only the case if it is laid joint to joint and glued to the subfloor. A primer made of epoxy resin or PU (polyurethane) is particularly waterproofing. The joints are grouted and sealed with silicone at the edges to ensure the floor is waterproof. Before laying the floor covering, the substrate must be dry, which applies especially to the corners.

Specialist knowledge is required to install an absolutely waterproof vinyl floor in the bathroom. The substrate and barrier primer must be perfect to prevent water penetration. If this is not done, mould can form, which can result in a complete bathroom renovation. For the reasons mentioned above, it makes sense to have a vinyl floor in the bathroom laid by a specialist company.
